OBS

Computer information service, operated under authorization of the SEC, [Securities Exchange Commission], to which the theft or misplacement of securities must be reported. As such, the NCIC can be used to check the validity of ownership of securities offered for sale. For example, a person comes to a broker-dealer and wants to sell 2,000 shares of IBM. A check of the security and its certificate number through NCIC will determine if that certificate has been reported as stolen or misplaced.
